Certain student loan borrowers pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) have begun receiving notices from the federal government informing them that their qualifying payment counts may be going down. According to the Department of Education, the change is intended to correct errors that were made over the last several years as the previous administration introduced different student loan relief programs. Under programs like the Limited Waiver Opportunity, many borrowers saw their qualifying payment counts increase, but the Department now alleges that some borrowers had too many payments counted towards PSLF. Now, it’s retracted those extra qualifying payments for some borrowers, but with little explanation of how or why they were identified.
If you received notice that your qualifying payment count was adjusted, we encourage you to give us a call. Borrowers should double-check their count based on studentaid.gov data and can submit a request to the FSA to reconsider their count. With the Department of Education’s staff whittled down by half and a lack of loan servicer oversight, fresh errors are being made as they make the myriad changes to the student loan system imposed by the OBBBA of 2025. If the changes were incorrect, borrowers should be able to have the qualifying payments reinstated. Reach out to us, and we can help you evaluate your QP count and plan a course of action with FSA.
